“H-A-Y-D-E-N, The Hayden 5K is about to begin!” The children at Hayden Child Care Center at Santa Teresita in Duarte, California cheered these words energetically during their morning assemblies on the days leading to the Hayden 5K. For the students who had been to the Hayden 5K, they knew that a great day was in store. For the children who had never experienced this family event, the cheering, preparing, and even paper tennis shoes on the bulletin boards revealed that something great was about to happen. These cheers and feelings of excitement seemed to carry through the preparations and into the day of the Hayden 5K at Santa Teresita where hundreds gathered to participate. Some ran, others walked, and still others rolled in wheel chairs and strollers. Over 600 people registered for the 5K, and even more came to the family festival. It was certainly a beautiful witness of the gift of friendship and community.

The 5th annual Hayden 5K Run, Family Walk, and Roll drew hundreds of people from all over Southern California. Whether the participant was a sprinter or a leisurely walker, there was a pace to satisfy all needs. Residents from Santa Teresita could even complete the race as a wheelchair team! After the race, the participants were invited to join the families and other members of the community for the engaging family festival. Children enjoyed playing games, making crafts, and even visiting the petting zoo. The more adventurous visitors were drawn to the bounce house and the climbing wall. People of all ages were also able to enjoy delicious food while watching the entertainment that included dancing and performances by the students at Hayden Care Center.

Sister Mary Patrice, Directress of Hayden Child Care Center, expressed her thoughts that the day was a great success: “The day of the Hayden 5K was gloriously beautiful. There was a tremendous family atmosphere, and it was wonderful to have so many members of the community come and enjoy spending time together. What a blessing the day was- How grateful I am to our Lord for this gift!” Sister Mary Patrice also wanted to extend her deepest gratitude to all those who helped to make this day possible- the participants, volunteers and sponsors especially the top two sponsors, Baja Ranch and the Wells Fargo Foundation.

Be sure to mark your calendars and save the date for March 8, 2014 for the 6th Annual Hayden 5K. It will be an event that you don’t want to miss!
